Hi Rob.

What did you detect on the link, because my Kaspersky Internet Security didn't flag anything up?

The link page describes the recording as:

"non-authentic overcleaned version of klankbeeld's funfair organ (Freesound # 121857)."

After the page loaded, a pop up told me it was scanning my computer as I had a virus. I instinctively shut it down straight away.

freesound.org has an "excellent" rating on WOT ...
http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/freesound.org

and a green tick from McAfee ...
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/freesound.org

The fake antivirus scam is delivered via a (Google) search ...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7955358.stm

i.e. I'm no scammer: I just thought the recording of the pipe-organ on Freesound may be of interest to readers of this forum.

Like Youtube, Freesound relies on Adobe Flash being installed on the computer to play the sound,
i.e. if you can view Youtube on your computer , you can hear Freesound …

When I clicked on the link I got a similar message to the one that Rob got, supposedly from Windows Internet Explorer, with a warning that my computer was at risk from a malware attack.and advising me to open the message to find out what is attacking.
We think that this is a bogus message attached to the link that may infect the computer if opened and Dave is trying to identify it.
I think it best to resist opening the link for the time being.

Regards
George.

Hi Folks.

I clicked on the Freesound link in Internet Explorer and a "Windows Security" warning came up saying I had infections all over the place.

On closer inspection, the Windows Security warning was actually a Malware website trying to scare you into clicking on it...at which point you WILL become infected, so if you receive a warning message DON'T CLICK ON IT!!!!

When the Malware page was on screen, my Kaspersky flagged up a Trojan warning, so unless you have really good Internet Security, like Kaspersky, then avoid linking to the Freesound site, which is a shame because the site is genuine, but obviously someone has managed to add a link to a Malware site.

Curiously, if I click on the Freesound link from this thread, the Malware page doesn't appear anymore!

Stay safe.

Post subject:  Re: fake anti-virus scam (still not guilty)

You’re right there is an fake antivirus which pops up when you click on the link I posted in this forum,
but only if you are using Internet Explorer browser, (I’m using FireFox).

Please feel free to delete the link I posted, or this entire thread to prevent anyone else falling into this fake antivirus trap.

I will contact Freesound to alert them of this problem in case the redirection is occurring at their end.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Post subject:  redirected URL

I managed a screen grab showing the redirected URL which occurs when clicking on the Freesound link I posted in this forum ...

It may be of use in diagnosing where the redirection to the scam is occurring.

Post subject:  I’ve got bad news

I’ve got bad news : I’ve contacted two computer geeks and both say the redirection from the Freesound.org link I posted at the start of this thread to the fake anti-virus scanner malware is probably due to this forum being compromised, (not Freesound.org).

The acid test would be if other links posted in this forum (not to Freesound) are also redirected to the same scam.

NB: the redirection occurs randomly : about every one in ten tries, approximately nine times out of ten times the link works correctly.

Hi Folks.

I downloaded the entire FOPS website (including the forum) on to my local PC and ran a scan with Kaspersky and fortunately, it didn't find anything malicious.

I will leave this topic in place, but remove the link to the Freesound website in the first post.

If anyone has any malware issues on this forum, please contact me as soon as possible.

Post subject:  Re: Rock-n-roll fairground organ

...because whenever the word "Malware" (MALicious SoftWARE) is mentioned, Internet users become very concerned and so the post attracted a large(r) number of viewings than some other posts.

I will take this opportunity to add that the FOPS Website and Forum is run from "scripting languages" which can not become infected with viruses, but as mentioned in a previous post, just to be safe I ran a scan on the entire website and forum with Kaspersky Internet Security and found no infections.
