Hi Everyone,

I am thrilled to have found this forum to meet all other organ fans :smile2: and get to know you all

I have recently aquired a dutch street organ and am looking to add to the front/facade.

Does anyone know of a good supplier of the gold leaf paint? And what type you usually use on the carvings? For example the "Dawn of the Century"? gold leaf paint?

Also any good suppliers of wood carvings as well?

Thank you in advance and Hello

Steve

Hello Steve.

The wood carvings i am using for my street organ come from
"Wild Goose Carvings" in Cornwall.

http://www.buycarvings.com
Tel:- 01822 833801

Email them at info@buycarvings.com and request a catalogue. :wink2:

Although aimed at the home decorator/commercial user they do some carvings that may be useful. Flowers, scrolls, leafs, Acorns etc.
Price wise, not too dear. Quality is OK. I have no issues with the bits i ordered. Postage is quick.
Pine is the usual wood but they also do other woods. :tiphat:
Pine is a little rough and requires a little finishing. But if you order Ash or one of the others you will get a better finish. At a cost.
But well worth taking a look. Hope this helps.

Peter Hood of www.rollcutter.com is now the owner of Arthur Prinzen's copy-carving machines and has many hundreds of patterns.
He has now started producing scroll-work for organ facades, although he has not yet produced a catalogue.
You could try contacting him on rollcutter@btopenworld.com

Hi Steve,

Welcome to the forum! :hai2:

Real gold leaf - costs a lot and it is not easy to apply!
Gold paint can be easier, but also needs some practice to get right.......
I can get the details of the paints I used last time, if you want.

http://stanegaterestorationsandreplicas.fotopic.net/p60347472.html

Carvings - Ash can be stained or painted and fine detailing is better than pine.....

Hope this helps...

There is no substitute for Gold Leaf which is expensive as StoneRoad says.
I have used Judsons Gold paint which can be obtained from good paint dealers or craft shops. It comes in small sachets of gold coloured powder and a resin type liquid which you mix as required and gives pleasing results but of course not as good as Real Gold Leaf.
Best of luck.
George.

There is no substitute for quality and the best place for quality gold leaf and decorative gold paint is Wrights of Lymm.

As a continuation of this topic, you will find that a lot of wood carvers prefer Lime to most other timbers.

Lime is extremely close and straight grained, is easily carved, sands up to a smooth finish with very fine paper, and is stable in most weather conditions.

Those of you who are ....senior....enough in years, will recall the first class carvings that Chris Chandler did on his 84 keyless DSO; they were all Lime.

Hope this helps........

Kind regards,

Alan

Hi Steve, I tried to contact you privately but got a message that your email isn't working so Dave has allowed me to contact you publicly.
If you would like to have a look at our web site: www.celestemechanicalmusic.co.uk
we have a selection of Lime carvings intended for organ façades that I hope you will find interesting.

Regards
Greg
